Hailing from Birmingham, UK, Rain Wan brings her vibrant energy to her single “sweet love.” A sugary song sure to get you feeling good, “sweet love” brings pop melodies with a fun beat together. We sat down with her to talk all about it!
Q: How did you get started in music? What is kind of your backstory and how does it show in your music?
A: Music has always been a part of my life growing up! From the age of 3, I remember my dad teaching me how to play the basic version of Für Elise on the keyboard. Eventually, I started to take classical lessons on the piano and violin. Then I found myself self-learning the guitar, singing, producing and songwriting. Nowadays, I almost always start my songwriting with chords on a keyboard, which leads to it having some simple production for the demos. I love getting heavily involved in creating my songs, from writing the lyrics and melody to the production and mix. It’s so rewarding to see the song in bits and pieces come together in the end! I think due to my classical background; I like to sometimes add little detailed melodies into the instruments where you’d only be able to hear them if you listened closely!
Q: “sweet love” is a song about how love can be a treat. What were the sonic inspirations and the themes you want to explore?
A: From the moment I wrote this song, I knew I wanted it to have a badass and playful beat and lyrics that were centred around sweet treats, because who doesn’t love a yummy dessert? I also wanted people to be able to dance to it! To lean into the theme, we included many elements and atmospheric sounds reflecting the lyrics. For example, one of those moments is featured in the pre-choruses. We wanted to tell the story in a restaurant setting, so in the back of the song you can hear people talking and cutlery clanking for the percussion, giving the impression that the conversation in the lyrics was taking place over dinner.
Q: In light of “sweet love” what is your favourite dessert or sweet treat?
A: I’m obsessed with any desserts that have fresh cream in them! My favourite right now would probably be a light fluffy cream cake! Mmm!
Q: What does music-making mean to you? What do you hope to share with others who listen to your music?
A: Music-making is my form of expression. However I’m feeling for the day, what I’m experiencing in my life at the time or see someone experiencing in their life, I’m more than likely going to be writing about that! I hope my music offers a safe space for those who listen, allowing them to express themselves fully and make memories of their own with the music.
Q: What kind of genres do you like to experiment with and why?
A: When I write I don’t think too into genres, I go more with feeling. If what I’m writing is sad, it’ll probably lean towards live-played instruments and acoustic vibes or if it’s on more of a high note, it’ll probably be more beat-centric! Depends on the vibe of what the song’s giving off. It’s crazy how the style we choose to go for changes the whole feeling of the song. I do love a good 808, though.
Q: Which artists do you take inspiration from? Who would be a dream collaborator?
A: Growing up, I listened to a lot of pop and R&B from artists like Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran, to name a few. So I think my sound has some elements of R&B influences. I have a huge appreciation towards artists who are masters at their craft, like Sia, for her ability to write hit lyrics and melodies or Ariana Grande for her insane vocals. I’d love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran, he’s a genius!
Q: What has been your favourite moment in recording or performing?
A: My favourite moment is seeing people’s reaction to when “sweet love” came out. It’s so different from my previous songs and it’s the first time I’ve ever expressed more of my fun personality in a song. Just watching this song come to life, finding my sound in the process and seeing people enjoy the song as much as I do has been special!
Q: What are your goals for 2024 and beyond? Where do you see yourself evolving?
A: There is more music on the way! I’d love to create an EP, and some albums and perform them live! Most importantly, I want to create meaningful experiences for those who listen to my music and follow along on the journey.
