We sat down with New York-based artist Ella Galvin to talk about her newest single “Do Not Disturb”, a UK-garage, dreamy bedroom-pop track that feels like bubble gum all about a situationship.
Q: How did you get started in music?
“I’ve been singing since I was in third grade, but I only started writing my music when I joined a band during my senior year of high school. I moved to New York City in 2019 and since then I’ve been building a network of musicians and producers!”
Q: What was the inspiration behind “Do Not Disturb” and “Spare Me”? What were the sonic and thematic ideas you were going for?
“‘Spare Me’ and ‘Do Not Disturb’ were both inspired by feelings I was experiencing in relationships. “Spare Me” is a bit more serious and sad, whereas “Do Not Disturb” has a more carefree, fun vibe to it. The sonic vibe of both songs reflects the relationships they were written about.”
Q: How do these singles tell the story of your upcoming debut EP? What can you tell us and what is it about?
“A lot of these songs are about learning and growing in your early 20s. It’s such a specific time of your life and there’s so much to navigate through. Writing about these experiences has helped me reflect on them more and make sure I’ve learned as much as I can about myself.”
Q: What does music-making mean to you? What do you hope to share with others who listen to your music?
“Making music is so therapeutic to me. I hope that when people listen to my music they feel happy, less alone, or find inspiration to accomplish anything they set their mind to.”

Q: As a rising artist, do virality trends on social media make it easy or difficult today?
“I think it could go both ways. It would be amazing to blow up with a TikTok sound, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ll have sustained success. I think it’s most important to have fans that are invested in who you are as an artist, instead of just caring about one song you’ve made. It helps to humanize artists, I think. We can all connect more deeply that way.”
Q: What kind of genres do you like to experiment with and why?
“This is something I’m currently learning and figuring out! I’ve been loving experimenting with rock and hyper-pop, but just deciding what production direction I want to take a song in helps me experiment. This project has taught me a lot about what I like to make.”
Q: Which artists do you take inspiration from?
“Amy Winehouse, Stevie Wonder, Lake Street Dive, Janelle Monáe, Lizzy McAlpine, and Remi Wolf.”
Q: Which artist(s) would be a dream collaboration?
“Remi Wolf has such a unique and fun soulful sound – she would be my dream collab. Also, Sabrina Carpenter’s music is so fun and musically intriguing, so I’d love to have a collab with her because I think we would have so much fun!”

Q: What has been your favourite moment in recording or performing?
“I think just seeing these songs come to life, both on stage and in the studio, has been my favourite thing to see. It gives me a sense of accomplishment!”
Q: What are your goals for 2024 and beyond?
“I’m hoping to play more shows in some new cities this year!”
