Today we sit with Matty Marz, who talks about her new single “Lacazette”, which is an upbeat, hip-hop-inspired pop track. As a self-empowerment tune paired with stunning visuals, it’s sure to have any listener feel like they can take on the world.
Q: How did you get started in music?
“I got started back when I was young. I started classical jazz and opera, and I also did musical theatre. Theatre gave me a good introspection to put on a character, and that in pop music you need a good persona to sell your work. All the best pop stars can tap that into that.”
Q: What was the inspiration behind “Lacazette” and “EPILL”? What were the sonic and thematic ideas you were going for?
“For ‘EPILL’, I wanted to make something fun. My friend Akira Akira is signed to Diplos’ label. He started playing this beat, and then I wanted to write stuff on it. It ended up being a fun record I never thought I could make. ‘Lacazette’ was not made for me, but I was able to step back and create something. The inspiration came from the soccer player. Both songs are really fun and there were varied objectives on what to make of them. For ‘Lacazette’, I was aiming to write a song for a different artist, but I kept it. The song came fast and the next few sessions were getting the structures. For ‘EPILL’, it was a different process, and I didn’t think too hard about what I was writing. I’ve never written a song that was for the club, so I wanted to make something sexy and gritty that was serious.”
Q: As a trans-woman making music in 2024, how do you hope to inspire other trans artists and help further representation?
A: I think the biggest things and bring about, is how you can be trans but be so many other things. I think artists have showcased what one side of pop music has looked like, but I want more commercial success and show more dimensions.
Q: What does music-making mean to you? What do you hope to share with others who listen to your music?
“Making music means the world to me. It’s my lifeblood to communicate what I’m feeling with the world. It’s a beautiful blessing to make that and change the modern culture with what I’m thinking. It’s the difference between life and death for me. It feels second nature, and I’ve worked long to know that.”
Q: Which artists do you take inspiration from?
“Mariah Carey, Prince, David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Charlie XCX, and obviously Beyonce. Those are the big ones, and they have influenced me. But I’ve been influenced by classical artists and rock artists.”
Q: Which artist(s) would be a dream collaboration?
“It would probably be Charli XCX, and if I had to pick someone dead or alive Prince.”
Q: What has been your favourite moment in recording or performing?
“The process of getting to the finalization of getting to a song. It can be difficult to find the magic, but once you get the things that gel it together, it can be very rewarding. It would soon probably have a crowd singing my songs as well.”

Q: What’s your upcoming album about?
“The title of it is called ‘m.w.u’ meaning “moment with you”. The concept was that I wanted to create a body of work that was energetic and dance-oriented. I wanted it to feel like a night out, and like a song that forces you to live in the moment, by being in the present by not looking at your future.”
Q: Tell us about the lead title track of the newer album.
“The “m.w.u” sound space is introspective, and it’s filled with questions. “If you knew the truth, would you want me more?” The chorus is reconciling this kind of drop.
Q: What genres do you want to experiment with?
“So many genres. I’m debating what the next project is going to look like, but there are more R&B, slow ballads, and things to share with my voice. I want more rock and pop and y2K pop.”
Q: What are your goals for 2024 and beyond?
“Release my album, play more shows and take over the world, casually, of course. I want to impact pop culture.”
